Science

Addison Central Supervisory Union Science Philosophy Statement:

Science is both a method and a body of knowledge.  Science is a disciplined, systematic way of gaining knowledge about our environment and us. Science is a logical process, which may include observation, intuition, investigation, and the construction and testing of hypotheses.  Science is also a dynamic body of knowledge so obtained.

Through active engagement in inquiry science, students in our schools will be expected to demonstrate their ability to use scientific methods, concepts, and knowledge to describe, investigate, research and explain phenomena.

Power Standard #1-Human Body
Student explain the human body is a unique in its heredity, body systems, and development and can be affected by the environment.
Enduring Knowledge:
  • The human body is unique in its heredity, body systems and development and can be affected by the environment.
Students will know…
  • People have different external features, such as size, color of hair, skin, and eyes. However, humans are more like one another than like other animals.
  • A human baby grows inside its mother until its birth. Even after birth, a human baby is unable to care for itself, and its survival depends on the care it receives from adults.
Power Standard #3-Physical Science
Students explain the effect of energy on matter.

 Enduring Knowledge:

  1.  Everything is constantly moving; motion is relative, but the motion of an object can be described and predicted by tracing and measuring its position over time.
  2.  Force is an influence that can to change the motion of an object.
  3.  Energy is necessary for change to occur. It is the ability of matter to bring about change.
Students will know…
  • The position and movement of an object can be described such as fast, slow, speeding up and slowing down and movement in different directions.
  • A force is a push or a pull. Force can change the motion of an object.
  • Objects fall to the ground unless something holds them.
  • Magnets can move some objects without touching them.
  • Sound is caused by vibrating objects.
Power Standard #5-Life Science
Students explain that all living organisms have identifiable characteristics that allow for survival.

Enduring Knowledge
  1. All living organisms and their component cells have identifiable characteristics that allow for survival.
  2. All living things exhibit patterns of similarity in their structures, behaviors and biochemistry.

Students will know…

  • Living things (plants and animals) are made of parts that enable survival.
  • All organisms undergo stages of development that include being born, developing into adulthood, reproducing and dying.
  • Most organisms come from male and female parents.
  • Some kinds of organisms that once lived on earth have completely disappeared, although they were similar to others that are alive today.
  • Power Standard #6 Earth Science
Students explain that the universe, Earth, and all Erath systems have undergone change in the past, continue to change in the present, and are predicted to change in the future.

    Enduring Knowledge

    1. The universe, earth and all earth systems have undergone change in the past, continue to change in the present and predicted to continue changing in the future.

    Students will know…

    • Earth materials are solid rocks and soils.
    • Soils and rocks have properties of color and texture; in addition, some soils retain different amounts of water.
    • Change is something that happens to many things.
    • The sun provides the light and heat necessary to maintain the temperature of the earth.
    • There are cyclical changes that we see throughout the seasons that can be observed and recorded.
