News From Kindergarten

Language Arts
This week we have worked more on scooping sentences to sound smooth when we read. When your child is reading to you at home have them practice this strategy. Some students took their writing journals home over the past weekend to read with you. If it is still at home please make sure to have your child return it to school so that they can continue to write in it daily. We are building our sight word list and now have 15 words total! The goal for then end of kindergarten is to know 20 sight words.

Mathematics
This week we have been begun to work with numbers over 20. We added a new workplace, Count and Compare Unifix cubes. We will also be learning about dimes on Friday.

Composting/Recycling
We were treated to a fabulous presentation and interactive learning experience about composting from Ms. Claire Huestis. She taught us that worms are the best recyclers around! We are housing her worm farm until Friday. We also made a base mixture to begin composting at school. Ms. Claire loaned us a classroom-sized compost bucket as well as a 55 gallon drum compost container.

Fieldtrips
Please notice the enclosed fieldtrip permission slip for Castleton State College in a few weeks. We need parent drivers! Please consider coming with us particularly if you haven’t had the opportunity yet this year.

Classroom Kindness
We have really struggled to be kind to each other lately. Students seem to be far less tolerant and respectful of each other which has made our classroom feel a bit scratchy. As a parent I have found it difficult to get my son in bed at his regular bedtime due to the later sun setting but it is apparent to me that the amount of sleep he has directly relates to his behavior, so please keep this in mind for your children.

Buddy Reading
We are partnering with the third grade class to do some buddy reading on Fridays. Students in both classes have the opportunity to read to each other and brag on their abilities. We love our 3rd Grade Buddies!
